Me and my friends are planning to take a trip to Alaska in 2010 from Pennsylvania, right outside of Pittsburgh. On our way to Alaska, are there ways to make money and how? Also, we hunt and is it possible to take shotguns with us for duck hunting? How long will the trip take, and can we do hiking and fishing along the way too? What are some good places to visit on the way up? I am thinking of taking a GMC 1500, is this a good choice?

Thanks for any help!

Wow, what a great trip! Depending on what your goals are, you may not want to take the most direct route. (google maps) I might take I-90 all the way to Montana then head north thru Glacier Nat. Park. Going up to Calgary, I would detour again thru Banff and Jasper Nat. parks. they are gorgeous, and will help break up the long drive. these detours will add about 8 hours to the trip (not counting the time you actually stop in the parks) From there take the standard alaska highway.
Taking the ferry on the way back is a good option. You will see totally new scenery on the boat, and then you can take a different route back across the USA on your way home to PA.
I would NOT cross the border with any guns without knowing for SURE its not illegal. Border guards are no joke. I think by then you will have to have a passport to go thru Canada. I have always heard about the big money that can be made in the commercial fishing industry in alaska in the summer. the work is either dangerous, or gross in the "gutting" factories.... but it is available and pays well from what i hear. I also hear that there is a spot or two in northern canada where it is too far to make it to the next gas station, so you have to carry some gas cans of your own. I am sure there are some good books out there on these travels. Do some research. It will pay off big time!

In 2010, Alaska will become Russian again! The US sold Alaska to Russia.

Probably much more relevant to ask Canadians this question, as most of your travels will be through Canada to get to Alaska. If you stop by the province of Alberta in CAnada, you can get any job you want becuase of the labour shortage. As for guns, ask customs.
