People criticize Bush because they say only 30% of Americans support the War in Iraq, and therefore we should end the war.

But what if 70% of America wanted something OUTRAGEOUS??

What if 70% of America wanted, say, rape to be legal. Should we legalize rape just to appease the Majority?

Liberals always want this country to pander to the wants of every fringe minority, but when it comes to the war, it's MAJORITY RULE, BABY!!!

So which is it?

Call me crazy, but I prefer my elected leaders to actually *gasp* lead. Why do we need leaders in the first place if one believes tat we should be governed by a "poll-ocracy"?

This is funny. In 2003 the right kept referring to polls that showed 70% support for the war. Never mind that only half of that number supported unilateral invasion by the US. O'Reilly and the rest kept throwing out that 70% number.

If you want an example of 70% of people wanting something outrageous, there you go. You got the invasion of Iraq. I hope you're happy.

They should use good judgement. Government of the people, by the polls, for the polls, will perish from the earth in short order. At one time, the Nazis had over 70% approval of the German people. Did that make them right?

Polls are used only if they agree with them.
I am glad you do not live in a democracy, every time the public changes its mind the rules change. NO THANKS!

Just think on how many times society was caught up in the emotion of something.

The President is not, and has never been elected by the people. The people's voice in the federal government is in the US House of Representatives. The Senate is elected by the people, but their original intent was to be the voice of the States.

The majority of parts of the country thought that black people were inferior and shouldn't have the same rights as others. Should we have listened to them and allowed it to continue on because it was the will of the people?

Sticking your finger in the air to decide what to do is called the absence of leadership. If you want someone who looks at polls, you will get a corrupt person in charge.

America = government of the people, by the people, for the people.

If 70% of the people want something, it ought to be done. It isn't the President's job to second-guess the will of the people. He simply isn't supposed to do that. It flies in the face of America as a concept.

they have to walk a tightrope ... they are elected to act upon the will of the people (polls) but at the same time they were elected on their stated values and ideology to represent the people... it is a tough balance to say the least.
