That light means that the engine is overheating. It doesn't mean that the water is going away. It could be a faulty sensor, but in all likelyhood, it is overheating. It could be a faulty thermostat, or the radiator could be clogged. You need to have it checked out before hot weather gets here.

Check your water thermostat. It will be under the top radiator hose where it goes into the engine. There could be a pinhole leak in the radiator or the clamps may be loose on the hoses.Your water pump Bering may be shot and there's a Little weep hole under the pump that starts leaking when the barrings go out don't forget to check the heater hoses all so.The thermostat is most likely the problem. One other thing is a blown head gasket or a cracked block or a cracked head check your oil for milky white stuff in the oil.One last thing when the water pump went out on my 75 ford pickup when the engine was st oped the water would run out of the pump.I would start the truck and add the water while it ran. Then i would put the cap back on the radiator but not all the way just so it wouldn't fall off drove that truck like that for 3 months over the Allotment pass here in California with no problems.the presser would never build up and it wouldn't get hot.Soon As i turned the engine off all the water would run out again. The engine block was all cast iron not aluminum so I'm not positive that would work on newer engines.

The first thing to do is to check the coolent. Then you might try changing the thermostat on the radiator, it the cheapest and easiest to replace. That will ensure that you are getting a correct reading on the temp. If that doesn't help, flush the radiator, change the oil filter. If you have problems after that, then you've got serious engine trouble. Good luck!

It might be a clog in your system. You had better have it checked out before driving the car, to avoid serious damage.
