I know you invite people over like a party and the bring gifts to fill a trunk for the student going off to college but what else can you do to make it fun?

My parent's threw me a similar party when I went off to college, they had made a portfolio of my school age years, and a collage with a road on it that said "to college". They had decorated it in my college theme, we had music, hour derves and games, it was great.

Just thought I would add some additional thoughts to my original post given the number of negative comments posted in reference to your question:

My parents did this instead of a graduation party, they weren't being cheap...people wanted to honor and celebrate my success, and that's great. In addition to the celebration, my parents contributed to all of my dorm room expenses, etc.....

Bottom line, no one requires you to give a gift at a party, if you don't want to bring one, dont. But there's nothing wrong with someone celebrating the fact that they've had a major accomplishment in life, and most caring people want to help you celebrate your success.

My mother had one for my brother. She used a footlocker and it was FULL! She put up pictures of him as a child (the one of him carrying the baby doll by the foot was a big hit)

She also asked all of his friends and family to write something in a journal. We remembered some fun stuff and it was a great conversation piece.

She made a trivia type game of things she thought he should know before leaving home. She made a list of questions and everyone answered - some of the answers were hilarious. We had a great time.

i have heard of something similar, in person-friendly words it replaced into refered to as a "mail-bathe". this type of element is quite tacky certainly. If the couple doesn't favor something and if their households are too time-honored to definitely attend/throw a bath, there is not any reason behind presents to be requested.

No. I am sick and tired of people expecting other people to pay for their expenses. Pay for your own kid's stuff. You have a lot of nerve.
