Memories of the emotions you felt when things were the best. You can find those feelings again but not with that person because you've both been changed by the ending. You only miss the feeling, not the person. Keep that in mind.

Here's what I learned from the magazine "Psychology Today". There are two chemicals produced in the brain that tie us to our relationships. First chemical is "Dopamine" & it's a short-term chemical response. This is the "Love Sick" feeling you experience when you first start dating. This brain chemical is also stimulated with 'alcohol' and narcotics like 'cocaine'. For some ppl, the 'Dopamine' becomes addictive like alcoholics (aka Sex Addicts). You don't need to have 'sex' to be addictive, but it's that "love sick' rush they're after.

Second brain chemical stimulated by love is "Serotonin". This is a long lasting brain chemical response. You can also stimulate this by smiling at people or petting a dog or cat. Within a relationship, the chemical is much stronger. Studies on dolphins conclude that if a spouse dies, the other spouse will soon die of starvation.

So, now that I've bored you to death, how does this apply to your hate? I would guess that you have an addiction to the feeling of "Dopamine". In fact, you're like a junkie and to intensify this rush, you fuel it with hate. In many ways, you're self-destructive and thrive in anger to deal with problems. I would suggest you go 'Cold Turkey' and focus your attention on a pet so you can increase your serotonin levels.

This actually came up in my child psychology class, and the attachment can be different for girls/women than it is for boys/men.

I've also heard studies that talk about teenagers in love as being similar to the effects of taking narcotics.

The reality is that they were your first love, and it will always be hard. My first love died a few years ago, and I still think of him as if he were alive, and it's hard for me. I have since practically transferred all of those feelings onto the person who I consider my second love, and it doesn't make things better. I had even taught myself to hate him, but in the end, I found that I never could. Good luck in your quest to forgive and forget (if that's what you want to do).

If you still harbor those feelings of "hate," which are pretty strong emotions (and not far from love, by the way), then you still carry feelings for that person.

It's only when you quit caring that you can forget them.

Man...... When I see mine I do have a slight wondering feeling for what might have been. We only dated for like a week but we remained friends for a long time, and it always bothered me. I found out she still had feelings for me but was to nervous to say anything. Oh well, what might have been.
