you need a 10 gallon filtered cycled tank minimum (for a goldfish under 4") not 1 - 2 gallon.

if the goldfish is over 4" you need a 20 gallon tank.

he cannot be kept in anything smaller as his waste (poopy) will mess up the water and make him sick. and he will develop growth problems.

you can pick up these size tanks quite cheaply from petco etc. but you will need to CYCLE it, see the thread below, otherwise you could kill your fish off with ammonia poisoning.

Anything from a 10 g tank on down to a 1 or 2 g will cost you almost $10, so you might as well get yourself a nice 10 g tank to start with. They are a good all around starter tank and will hold one goldfish quite nicely. Just be sure to get yourself a good filter because goldfish are dirty little guys that put out a lot of waste.

Also, be sure and do your regular (weekly) partial (30-40%) water changes to keep the ammonia, nitrites and nitrates at the lowest levels. They are all toxic to your fish. Regular water changes are the best thing you can do for your fish to keep it healthy and happy besides feeding it ONCE a day.

Your goldfish will die pretty quickly in a one or two gallon. You can get a 10 gallon at least, for only $9 at WalMart. And I saw some sweet 20 gallons for only about $20 at PetSmart. If you get a pet, you should at least give it a chance to live or you may as well buy a dead fish to begin with. Good luck!

It depends on what kind of tank.
If you want the acrylic it won't cost as much as the glass.
The acrylic 1-2 gallon tanks shouldn't cost more than $20 w/all supplies included, besides gravel & decoration.
Check out walmart.com, they have all different kinds of smaller tanks at fairly low cost.

my sister got me a 1 gallon fish tank at walmart for about 10 dollars. i think the 2 gallon one is about twenty dollars. and my tank came with a bubbler and an undergravel filter. the lid also has a light in it. it's pretty spiffy!

they don't seel them that small, unless you plan to buy thos round ones for a couple of goldfish or guppies (they only breed to much to fast).

The small tanks don't have lights, pumps etc and you will have to clean it out every other day, are you willing to do that?
