when I push the button to turn it on, nothing shows up on the screen, windows won't boot up all it does is the fan just keeps running and running (the fan that goes on right before the windows song plays letting you know that windows has booted successfully) we have just had the motherboard replaced and the computer is barely a year old. (we bought it february 2006)

the montor is fine, I've checked it on my laptop, we have even tried a diferent monitor, just to be safe, it worked great one day and the next it was all f**ked up. I have had a friend look at it and he said that its not a virus and that it is hardware.

Almost sounds as if the motherboard has problems again. The power supply also could be a problem too but I'm leaning toward the motherboard. Is it a name brand computer like Dell or HP? Or one of those cheaper ones like Acer. Brand names usually are of better quality.

One way to do a little debug is to remove the cover and disconnect devices (hard drives and I/O cards - modem) as much as possible and try starting the computer to see if one of these devices is dragging it down. Only do this if you feel confident you can do it.

Are you hearing the POST beeps? If you are not then, we need to go down the list here.
1. Have you added any new hardware to your computer before it started doing this? If yes then remove it and you should boot ok. You just need to get a larger power supply to boot up.
2. Try a different plug. Your surge protector may be going bad.
3. If you hear the post beeps but nothing on the screen then double check your connections on your monitor, they may be loose. If they are not then you may need to get a new monitor, or check your monitor on another computer verify it is working.
4. If your monitor works on another computer then your video card needs to be replaced. There should be a series of beeps that happen at POST to tell you what is the problem. You will need to contact your manf. to find out the number of beeps for what problem.

Good Luck

Listen for how many post beeps you get on start up, then go look them up on the internet. This will give you a direcetion as to what the problem could be. Make sure everything is securly connected to the motherboard. You could try another video card or borow one. What as the last thing you did on the computer? This is the cause of many problems.

Have you successfully booted the computer since the motherboard replacement? If not, take a look inside the case (or have the shop do it, as the case may be) and make sure all the power and drive cables are snugly in place.

Hard to tell Opal, but my first suggestion is to check the monitor - Do you get the power light on??

and cables - are they all attached tightly and correctly??

If all this is correct, then you should get a monitor self-test screen or a blinking cursor or something. Maybe even an error message.
