My daughter is 4 months old. She has some cradle cap, and scratches her head until it bleeds. I have put scratch-mittens on her hands, and a hat on her head, but her hands stay wet all the time with the mittens because she always puts her hands in her mouth, and the hat she pulls off. I used Selsen Blue (per her pediatrician) and it cured the cradle cap but her head oozed for 12 hours afterwards. I used baby oil and a dry cloth to pull the cradle cap off, but it still causes oozing. I've used triple antibiotic ointment on her, which works for a while, but then when I stop using it it seems to come back. I could really use some help....

I guess I should have said that I trim her nails regularly, and trimmed them just last night as much as I possibly could--she still scratched until bleeding this morning....

Dr A. Kunun has a site with some answers for this - she is a dermatologist and Ive attached the site with the answers for this.
Hope that you find some relief for your little one and IF you don't I'd suggest taking your sweet little one to a pediatric dermatologist in your area - or a dermatologist if you can't find a ped specialist.
Regular Pediatricians are wonderful but sometimes it takes a specialist to get the right answer quickly so that your daughter doesn't have to suffer through the itching and scratching and bleeding - not to mention the possibility of infection in those open sores. Poor baby :-(
My heart goes out to her and also to you as her Mum, not being ablt to make it all better, I know that's the worse feeling in the world.
Good luck to both of you.

Isn't it sad when you can see that they are hurting themselves but can't stop it? The only two cents I have is that everything I have read about cradle cap says not to put hats on them. Especially if they are sweaty babies (my 2 month old is always sweating it seems!) cause they need their heads to get aired out or else it won't go away...
Wal-Mart has a cradle cap lotion that you put on and brush through their hair (mine has a lot of hair...) and will make the scales come off...I bought it and use it. Don't know how great it is but her cradle cap went away...and she had it BAD. But I caught it immediatly and starting using it and brushing her hair for a long time in the evenings...(it seems to calm her) and within a few days it went away. Also, I don't put hats on her anymore...

Poor thing. As a mother and health and wellness consultant, I know that baby's skin is ultra sensitive. There are products that will help you. It's really important to use pure water based products for their skin that is gentle enough to deeply condition and hydrate while providing natural ingredients to keep them feeling soft without causing irritation and dryness (dry flaky scalp).
Being that my children are 6 and 8, I've tried many baby care products the last few years. Last year I discovered Arbonne and fell in love with their products. Arbonne has a great baby care line (hair and body wash, body lotion, diaper rash cream, sunscreen, and body oil) that is botanically-based and pH correct, pediatrician and dermatologist tested, non-sensitizing, non-irritating, and formulated without nut oils. Their diaper rash cream is formulated with oat flour which is an emollient and an emulsifier. It’s highly absorbent and hypoallergenic. Oat flour helps to soothe and soften dry, itchy and sensitive skin.
Many baby care products contain mineral oil, the molecular structure of which is too large to penetrate the pores of our skin, sitting on the top layer like saran wrap. These products get wiped off over time and give little to no benefit but rather a temporary feeling of softness.
If you're interested in learning more, I'll be happy to help you.

How bout trying some special shampoo for cradle cap?? I believe most of the major companies that make baby products make it. It works wonderfully and not as harsh as all the stuff you've been using. I'd be scratching to. Selsun Blue makes my head itch when I use it. Try the cradle cap, I believe it's lotion or shampoo, and see if that doesn't make things easier on her. I'm mom to 3.

First, go get a little bath brush. It is hard to explain...it has very soft plastic cone shaped hairs on it. Mine was used to clean my baby's skin when she was born, and I have always used it to scrub my baby's hair when I wash her. I have seen some brushes made the same way, used to clean mushrooms gently.
1. Get that brush.
2. Cut your baby's fingernails....she can't scratch anything if she has nothing to scratch with.
3. Use Aveeno babywash/shampoo, and use that to wash her hair.
4. Don't wash her hair every day.
5. Put the oil in her damp hair, then use the aveeno babywash to wash her hair afterwards.
6. Lightly comb her hair after she is dressed again.
Don't use a hairdryer to dry her hair, but towel dry it a little.
Stop using the antibiotic ointment. If she touches her head, then touches her eyes, it can bother her.

It sounds like she might have eczema. My 1-yr-old cousin has it (used to be severe) and my son has some of it, too. You can cut fingernails and try a little drop of Neutrogena T-Gel as shampoo. This helps get rid of cradle cap. My cousin's hands used to be held so that she couldn't scratch, but that gets tiring! Good luck!

Mommy, your drying the daylights out of this kids head. Stop using that Selsun!
As a hair stylist this is really strong stuff, and drys out the scalp of adults.
As a Mom, cradle cap is not something to dry out, it's already dry. You need baby shampoo and baby lotion. I think the oozing is from all the stuff you're doing to it.
Leave her little head alone; cradle cap is normal, bad as it looks.
You might want to find another pediatrician.
