I contracted a bladder infection or urinary canal infection last week. It was incredibly painful and I was passing blood. My urine was like the contents of a month old goldfish bowl. I was treated with Triethoprim. Have I contracted a sexually transmitted disease? Are there any questions I should be asking my wife who is my only sexual partner?

the only way to know if you contracted a sexually transmitted disease is to get tested. Normally they do a urethral swab, and then blood tests for syphyllis, hiv. just cause you have a urinary infection, does not mean you have an STD. Men dont' get them as much as woman, but they still do. Some times they get infections related to the prostrate that can cause problems.

Mmmm. If you are at the age of 50's with a flow problem and pain, the old prostate may be playing up. This would not account for the blood and goldfish water. Hope the fish survived the treatment. Sounds like you had an e.coli infestation after looking up your script. You could have done that yourself and preserved you wife's honour on Answers. Lazy Boy! Too much water etc is as bad as too little. Get the balance right. You can flush out the good bacteria if you drink too much. Lay off 1. Coffee. 2. Tea. 3. Any booze whatsoever. You should recover before the medication runs out and be back to normal in ten days, watch your lifestyle choices in future.

There is a possibly a risk of STD (chlamydia can cause UTI's) if you have had unprotected sex, however 85% of bladder infections can be caused by other reasons. Your doctor should have taken a urine sample for culture and this will tell you which bacteria caused the infection. Therefore you doctor is the best person to advise on the cause and cure. In the meantime drink lots of water (about 1.5litre) during and after treatment, urinate frequently and effectively (ensure the bladder empties properly).
Avoid sexual intercourse until a diagnosis in found and until symptoms are completely gone.

All GOOD doctors know that all males who develop a UTI, which should ALWAYS be confirmed by MSSU BEFORE treatment is commenced, should if correct medical practise is followed have urology investigation. I am a bit worried by your question which reading between the lines makes me think that these things are not happening?

There is nothing in your question which would suggest an STD, and most of the time no particular cause is found. You don't give you age, so I am loathe to make further suggestions.

If I am right and no investigations have been carried out, I think you have no choice but to go to your GP and ask him why not!

a urinary tract infection is not an std, your doctor should have told you that. In men, they are not that common, and are usually caused by poor hydration (you don't drink enough water) and you don't urinate often enough giving bacteria a lovely little warm place to grow. Had you been infected with an STD, you wouldn't have been given trimethoprin (sulfa) because it is not effective against most stds, it is effective against the most common urinary tract bug, which is ecoli.
if your urine had cultured out an std, you would have been given a cyclosporin or penecillin based drug. So stop trying to blame your wife, and blame yourself. Your habits brought this on.

If at all worried my firdt trip would be to the gp before accusing your wife of foul play. It might not be anything other than an infection so why are you suspiscious??

Have a think but my advice is a blood test or three to rule anything out before talking to your wife.

Sounds like you just had a bladder infection. Stay away from caffeine, alcohol, drink lots of water and supplement your diet with cranberry tablets. That's not sexually contracted.

The best thing for you to do is find out what bacteria caused this by asking your doctor and get tested for STDs before you start making assumptions about your wife's character.

I had similar thing fortnight ago. Had same tablets. NOT STD at all. My doctor told me not to use perfumed stuff in the bath, to wear only cotton underwear, and to drink at least(if not more) 4pts water daily

I wouldnt go blaming the mrs, she might have down the divorce courts. The Triethoprim should clear it up by the end of the course.
