They say Bajans are snobs, because we are more developed than a lot of our Caribbean neighbors. They also say we are disorganized, that nothing is urgent. There is even a saying that goes, 'you are not late, you are just on Bajan time' which means that Bajans are usually late for every thing...

The biggest stereotype, is that they are friendly. I just spend 10 days on this miserable island, and I assure you, they are NOT friendly. They are the rudest people I've ever met. Maybe only a handful are genualy friendly, the rest are only friendly when they want your money. The people who say they are friendly, probably come from London, where apparently, you can get the police called on you, for saying "good morning" on a subway, so to them anyone is friendly.

Seriously, you can't take a picture of a damn bus, without the driver yelling at you to give him money. I took a picture of a lifeguard tower, and was asked for money by a local, just because he was standing there with his raggedy *** bike. And they don't ask for it, they DEMAND it! First time in my life I experienced something like this. You can't touch anything in a store, or drink beer inside a damn restaurant, unless you order food. Another first. And unless you order a BUNCH of food, they will not be happy. Cab drivers and waiters try to keep your change, and when you ask them to give it to you, they get angry. It took me 30 minutes to get my damn change. They don't care about you. All they want is your money. I couldn't walk into a church without being asked for money.
It's not true that EVERYONE will say good morning to you. They will not even talk to each other, let alone visitors.
And the people have serious anger issues. I had to leave my food, and rush out of a BURGER KING, because a fight was about to break out, inside the restaurant. Another first.
They take forever to serve your food, than rush you so other customers can come in. And a bus driver almost ripped my arm off, and made me fall over, because he was in a hurry. They are always telling tourists, slow down, relax, when they are the ones who need to slow down and relax.
And for some reason, the locals REALLY hate having their picture taken. We couldn't even enjoy a church, without a vendor making sure we weren't taking HIS picture. Another first.
Every tourist we talked to on the island, was absolutely shocked, and in disbelieve when we told them all this stuff.
This is not the place everyone thinks it is. I really hope the locals will wake up, and realize this is NOT the proper way to treat tourists, and each other.

Well Gardener, I have heard that as well so could be I suppose.

I think Slim Sha must be talking about our politicians not the regular Bajan.

Unfortunately I have to disagree with Strudder about being laid back, as I fear it has more to do with being lazy.

Farai, I have never heard of barbadised and I did a search on it too - I do know that a lot of the early settlers were in fact indentured WHITE people and that their descendants are still here and believe me, the women are not fake, they are real.

To summarize I think the most commonly heard stereotype has to be their friendliness and eagerness to talk.

Come on down and check it out for yourselves!

The slave ships leaving Africa landed first at Barbados, where the finest slaves were sold.
This led to the black people of Barbados being taller, stronger, more beautiful and more wise than their less fortunate fellow-travellers who had to sail on even further.
This is why Barbadians are so witty and gorgeous and they even look completely different from other black peoples from the Caribbean.

i don't believe we are full of ourselves we are just proud to be Barbadians(bajans) and there is nothing wrong with that who wouldn't be proud for having their own dollar. Some of the islands their money is worth a whole let less. But ours is only half of the us dollar. US $2= BDS $1

They are too full of themselves - COCKY - think they are better than all the other Caribbean islands, especially the smaller ones because they've got their own dollar and University.
