Well if there are other people in the house then they should pitch in. We have a rule in our house. Since my boyfriend and myself work a lot and odd hours, my kids "job" is to clean house. Since they do not earn money to pay the bills they are to help take care of the house to take that additional work off us.
They do their own laundry, clean the kitchen, my oldest is learning to cook, and they are generally pretty good at keeping everything orderly. They also do the bathrooms. When you live in a house with other people everyone helps make the mess therefore everyone has a role in cleaning it up. If you can't clean up after yourself then you start loosing priviledges that come along with being in a house.

I hope you aren't giving your kids an allowance. They should not be getting one or being given money at all if they do not help around the house.
Today, when they come home from school, teach the 12 year old how to clean the bathroom. It's your decision if the 9 year old is responsible enough to work with bathroom cleaning chemicals. If not give him another chore.
Make a chore chart and hang it on the fridge. If you clean your bathroom once a week, have a rotation schedule. One week you clean it, one week your 12 year old cleans it, one week the 9 year old cleans it (if you decide to let him). Also assign chores, like sweeping, vacuuming, and mowing the lawn (again, your decision if the 9 year old can do any of these). Some good chores for the younger kid is drying dishes, if you hand wash them, or cleaning glass tables, doors, and windows with Windex.
There is no reason you should do ALL of the housework. Even if your children are busy with school, they should be able to do a few chores. Don't force all the chores on them at once, this might freak them out. Maybe this week, have them clean the bathroom, then next week add vacuuming, etc.
Good luck with raising responsible kids!

You can't really expect a 9 and 12 year old to really clean a bathroom. Or, maybe you can? Show them how to keep it clean.

I pay someone to come and clean twice a month. I have very little free time and I would rather be doing fun things than cleaning house.

I don't condone this but it works. My sister hated doing the dishes so she did a crappy job of it. When my mom saw she wasn't any good at it she told my sis never to touch the sink again. Do a bad job on the bathroom for awhile and you won't have to do it.

Only the bathroom? You lucky devil !!! With a bit of ingenuity and cunning you could minimise the work load in the bathroom. Or swap it for the kitchen....

Well...just don't do it...see how long they will let it go...(I couldn't do that but...) If you want something done right...yada yada yada. :) Hire a cleaning person...If you look around, you can find one fairly cheap. Good Luck to you!!!
