We've been dating a year, and she's now 2 months pregnant. I'm thinking we'll get engaged this summer and married next summer. Would it be better to get legally married at the courthouse before the baby is born, then have a wedding at a church next summer?

I'm wondering the differences between having a baby when legally marrried vs. not, such as birth certificate, taxes, etc.

Also, I have no doubts at all we have our child's best interests in mind. We both want to raise him or her and other children to follow the best way possible. I'm not too worried about finances, either. Her older sister is getting married in August, and we'd like to try and keep things as "normal" as possible (ie, still have a nice, big wedding at a church, honeymoon, etc.)

Also, the pregnancy wasn't planned. I'm not looking for moral lessons on what we did wrong, just solutions for making it as good as possible now. Thanks!

Girlfriend started a new job and will have insurance in another month and I'm paying for the first doctor's visit out of my own pocket. I don't expect anyone else to pay for my/our actions. : )

this depends on your moral issues. i know society in general, thinks it's better for you to be married when the baby is born, but that might not be the best route for you. In my case, my boyfriend and i were better off waiting until after the baby was born, that way the state health insurance paid for my delivery and hospital expenses. I had no other insurance. Shortly afterward, we were married and i was able to be added to his insurance at work. think of the financial end of things

Your name can still be listed on the birth certificate even if you’re not married (it just requires you signing an affidavit of paternity/acknowledgment of paternity/whatever it’s called in your particular state). The child can still have your last name even if you’re not married. You can still claim the child on your taxes even if you’re not married (but of course, you cannot file as ‘married’ you will have to file separate and only one of you will be able to claim the child).

Rich has a point about insurance. *Please don’t make the taxpayers pay for this pregnancy/birth! I’m tired of struggling because my taxes are so high, in part, because I’m paying for the births of other people’s children.* If girlfriend has her own insurance, that’s great, but if not, then you can’t add her to yours unless you’re legally married. But, you will be able to add the child after he/she is born (as long as you’re the legal father, and you are if your name is listed on the birth certificate).

It really depends on what you guys feel comfortable doing. As for the child, even if you aren't married, your name will still go on the birth certificate as the father, you will have to sign an affadavit stating that you acknowledge that you are the father since you aren't married. As for tax purposes, I believe only she can claim the child since you won't be married, but not entirely sure on that one.

Get married when you guys are ready to get married not just because she is pregnant. congratulations on your little one.

what difference does it make, she needs insurance to cover the birth and the health care of the baby,, she shouldnt mooch off public assistance. if you talked about getting married, then go to the courthouse and get it over with, you have a responsibility now to a child, a wedding is nothing compared to the next 20-22 years with school, food, college, housing,

It's entirely up to you as when you should get married. What does your girlfriend think? Do you just want to get married b/c she is pregnant? Do you want to be with her for the rest of your life? So many factors to consider here. No one can answer when you should or shouldn't. It's up to you and your gf to figure that out...that is if a marriage is wished by both of you. Good luck and congrats on the baby!

Maybe you should get married in a courthouse before the baby is born that way it'll be easier to deal with the records/names etc...

if you want to be married before the baby is born, then yes, do the courthouse thing and save up for a beautiful wedding later. i think it would be nice to have a big wedding, especially if your baby can be involved somehow.

Yes, you should since you already have the idea of getting married. it made no difference whether it now or later so long as you are finance is stable.
