Before you get carried away, the problem may be with a shift interlock rather than the cable. On these cars you have a system that prevents you from taking the car out of park without having your foot on the brake. It's called the shift interlock system. If there is a problem with the brake light switch or circuit then the control doesn't "know" you have your foot on the brake. first thing to do is to check to see if you have brake lights that are "On" when you step on the brake. if they are not on, the problem is usually with the brake light switch. If they do work, you can look in the owners manual to see where the manual release for the shift interlock is. usually you have to pry up the rectangular trim plate that goes around the shifter to find the interlock release slot on the older hondas. When you get the trim plat up you simply insert a key into the slot, push down on the key then move the selector out of park to neutral while you are pressing down on the key. then you can start the car in neutral. newer hondas have a rubber plug in the trim plate that can be removed for the same purpose.
It would be very unusual for you to need the shift cable
hope that helps

Gear Shifter Cable

I own a transmission shop, and I can tell you this; the cable is broken. The cable goes from the shifter to the transmission to change gears with. When it breaks you can't change to any other gear. This cable is a dealer item, meaning you can't purchase it from a parts store. The cost of the cable is pretty high, and even a used one out of a junkyard is expensive. Now, with all of this in mind no-one can tell you the cost of having it done without knowing the cost of the cable. The shop will get you for about 2 hours labor to change it. You could call a dealer and see what the cable will cost, and add about $60 per. hour labor to the cost, and you should be in the ballpark.
Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!
