I don't get good vibes about Vista but all new ones come pre-loaded with that. Comparing HP dv6208nr and Dell 1501 (with an increase to 1gb memory) or Dell E1405......don't want to spend more than abt $750........any recommendations? Could I get Windows XP instead of Vista?

I prefer Dell computers. They are good computers if you take care of them. The 1501 now comes standard with 1GB of RAM and starts at $599. That should stay under your budget.

Go with IBM/Lenovo. They've got more reliable laptops in that price range.
