In context, this word seems like a colloquialism which I am mispelling and not "a two-wheeled, self-balancing transportation device."

People oftentimes say, "that idea is a perfect 'segway' for my next topic of discussion," or "that (what you just said) provides the perfect segway into my next topic." Am I spelling it correctly, what does it mean, and where did it come from?

The context seems to indicate that it is meant as a colloquialism and to give it a very general meaning of positive, transitional, leading qualities. What is the real word/colloquialism, and how did it come to be so popular in our dialog.

What you are referring to in the first instance is the SEGWAY HUMAN TRANSPORTER. You can find out vast amounts about this product at their homepage:

www.segway.com

But in the second instance, I believe you are referring to:

segue - it is a noun meaning a seamless transition or passage of music meant to follow a piece while leading into another without pause. It is also an intransitive verb meaning to seamlessly transition or do the same such in a musical passage.

It comes from the Mid-18th century when the italians first began using the verb "to follow" (seguire) as an idiom in their language.

Through music, it gained widespread use, and by the end of the 1800's, it had spread to musical theatre, and from there, other areas. It is most often found in forms of artistic expression, whether it be paintings, literature, film, or music.

A segway is a small remark or story that helps link one idea to another. You could tell a story about playing in the park and say that was a good segway to my next story about the number of parks in my neighborhood. The stories don't have to be directly linked, it is just that the first story will have some element of the second story which allows them to flow together a bit.

And it's actually segue. A Segway is actually a two-wheeled 'vehicle' of sorts. Pronounced the same though.
