Are there any adverse effects from using Tums for heartburn during pregnancy. I try not to exceed the daily dose, but there are days I do take the max, depending on my heartburn.

Does anyone know any adverse effects that have been caused from Tums?
I know the plus side of it is that they are loaded with extra calcium.

Thanks again ladies!!

Many moms eat TUMS like candy during pregnancy. Heartburn can be nasty! I certainly took a lot of them (especially with the first 2 kids) and everything turned out OK.

The calcium in the TUMS is good for you.

Actually, if you pop one about every 15 minutes for the first 2 hours or so *AFTER* the birth, it can even help with your afterpains!

I was informed Rennies are better for pregnant ladies & they are not dangerous at all, they work better apparently & it even states they are ideal for heartburn etc during pregnancy...they work for me! As for the Tums, I am not 100% sure honey just use common sence and dont over do it with the dosage as you say. Good luck though xxxx

I recall they were ok. And full of calcium.. Which you need extra during pregnancy (of course) Good luck.. Hopefully the heartburn will ease.. My family has an old wives tale that if you encounter allot of heartburn while pregnant the baby is very hairy !!!

TUMS are excellent for pregnancy!! as long as you don't over do it (more than 6 a day) you are fine! it's a GREAT source of calcium for your babys growing bones! my OBGYN reccommends them! I eat 2 a day ... sometimes up to 6 depending on how bad my heartburn is.

good luck! God bless!

Well tums are pretty harmless...down side though is to much calcium can affect your ability to absorb Iron. In turn you can become Anemic. Not likely but does happen!

my sister works at an OB office and she says that taking Tums is pointless because like you say you have to take so many a day, try taking Zantac it has worked well for me.
even though there is nothing wrong with taking them. i just like my heartburn to go away and stay away! :)

All they are is calcium, so don't worry. Well and artificial flavours and colours and sugar.

If you are suffering though try taking papaya enzyme -available at most health food stores. It helps regulate acid production.
