I recall starting drum lessons around 3rd grade, but I'm wondering if we can/should try to start our sons into music earlier than that. I don't want to push them into anything, but I think they'd enjoy it and I think there are a lot of benefits to music education (I know I got a lot out of it).

7 is good, start with piano lessons, and then they can try another instrument and it will come easy.

Being a music teacher i would say to get them interested at an early age. Between 3 and 5 should be ok depending on what you want them to do. Basic music lessons would be fine at that age but something like voice lessons would not be appropriate until at least 7 i would think. The important thing is not to push and make sure they are having fun as well as learning it. The more supportive you are in a positive way the better!

It's so great to hear that someone realizes the importance of music education! It depends on what instrument the child is interested in. If they find the piano intriguing, then you can probably start private lessons around 5 or 6 yrs old. If they like wind instruments, usually you will need to wait for awhile so they have time to build lung capacity. In most elementary schools around here band starts in 5th grade. String instruments you can start at any time. Most schools around here start orchestra in 4th or 5th grade. (For maturity reasons I think). Drum lessons... that's up to you. If your child is always drumming on anything they can get their hands on - go for it! It'll be a good outlet for that energy. But if your child seems to need some help holding a rhythm or beat, maybe start with a different instrument.
Don't forget that singing and dancing and listening to music is just as important! Expose them to many different genres of music and let your child decide what they like best!
Make sure that playing an instrument is your child's choice and that it is what your child is interested in doing. Private lessons give a great one-on-one early start to music... but there's nothing wrong in waiting to start with their peers in school!

Well I play piano and it's a great instrument to learn and it's fun to play. I think that you should give them piano lessons and after a year or so, if they still want to play a different instrument then you should let them, because at that point they would have finger control, good technic, and they would already know all the notes in both the treble clef and the base clef, so it would be easier for them to learn a new instrument.

It depends on the kid. Some begin at 4, others at 10. However, you need to be careful that they enjoy it when you start. If they go into it with a bad attitude, they'll never do well with it.

I would say 5 or 6, any younger and they would hate it becuase they will feel like it impedes there maturity. Start out with the piano, it is the best.

Definitely around that age or even a bit younger. The younger they are when they learn, the easier it will be.
