Are they retrievable? Can someone else retrieve them?

This all depends upon several factors. Work or home? Webmail or email software?

Work vs. Home:
In order to comply with lots of government regulations, your emails at work are most likely logged somehow. This means that they could probably be brought back, but you'd get flak over it. Home email is typically done through your provider, and while they are probably logging your emails, those logs are pretty heavily secured and typically there isn't a way for you, as a user/customer, to get them back.

Webmail vs. Email Software:
All of the things that apply to work or home email apply to webmail (email accessed through a website.) Email software is a totally different animal. Once you retrieve something from your email provider and then delete it from your software, it is gone and there is very little you can do about it. Some of the really advanced Un-Delete programs might be able to resurrect it, but those chances aren't good.

They go into trash where they can still be retrieved! You have to empty trash and also have a program installed that erases your hard drive in order to completely abolish any trace!

In yahoo, for example, emails are put in a trash folder and can be retreived by anyone logging in to your account. Outlook and Outlook Express are much worse, because the emails are stored on the local computer, so anyone hacking your computer can read those deleted emails. Yahoo emails would be much, much harder to hack because Yahoo's servers are managed by professionals who understand computer security while your computer, managed by you, is unlikely to have such tight security.

The flow to e mail Heaven! relies upon on software... some software will shop it in "Deleted products"....others will delete them proper there. often times they go away a duplicate on the server....different circumstances they don't .

They disappear into the abyss of cyberspace.
You can check your "Trash", but, if they not there, I will say they gone.
