Should I turn the modem to off when not in use?

My computer came with Norton firewall and virus detection. Will this be good enough. Could I use the security features from the ISP (Earthlink), will they work as well?

What additional security measures should I look into?

This is for a stand alone (non-networked) home computer.

Make sure to disable file and print sharing. I bought a router that acts as a firewall as well.

Never use security features provided by ISP, i suppose you could turn it off when not in use, Norton is OK but not foolproof, I recommend AVG anti-virus(free) Sygate firewall, can still find it free even though Symetec (Norton bought it) and/ or SpywareTerminator also free

without a doubt a router is the first thing to get. preferably a linksys, or cisco. linksys is owned by cisco now. but the cisco is better. a linksys router is 50 dollars and is a must have for broadband users. networked or not. the norton products should do you fine. i'd add a product called adaware from download.com. it's free and you can run it once a week to check for spyware. it's easy to use too. routers are ready to go out of the box. very easy to install.

You should Try a firewall.
Comodo personal firewall is free and is the only firewall that passes all known leak tests. www.comodo.com
You should also try an anti-virus like Avast! home edition. it is also free. www.avast.com
Delete norton and its firewall and let your system breath as you will notice a performance increase in it.
Also use anti-spyware softwares.
Spyware terminator and Ad-aware se personal are bothe free. www.spywareterminator.com and www.lavasoft.com
Good luck!

Using a router will help, even when your System is on.
The router will help in stopping attacks or access problems. You also do not need to disable anything, just set up a Good Router ( LINKSYS) and allow it to do what it needs to do

-----Use good passwords. The best passwords contain both small and capital letters, and both numbers and symbols (#$%). They should use unconnected words that have nothing to do with you: hEavy41Red$ .---Jim
