I went to Destin for vacation one summer. It was clean, beautiful and reasonably priced. However, out of five days we only went in the water once. There was some sort of plankton/algea/seaweed thing that made the water just off the beach nasty. You might want to check and see if that was an unusual occurrence or if it's something that happens at the same time every year. Also, if you're into looking for seashells there weren't any. I went in September and Destin was super-nice. White sands, warm water...and crabs. Watch out for these. Check out this website for accomodations.

There's also lots of nice restaurants and fun things to do (go-karts, pier).

St. Pete is nice, there are TONS of places that are nice to stay in that area.
