When you and I, and anyone else around the world, exchange information through this question and answer forum, we're using the internet. Anybody with access to the internet can join in.

When the Yahoo employees in Sunnyvale CA communicate with each other in their main headquarters building, they're using an intranet system. Think of it as a private (closed to the general public) means of communication that you and I can't access.

But Yahoo has offices all over the world. Look at all the flags down below. So if employees in Sunnyvale need to communicate with Yahoo employees in London, Beijing, etc. they use a special intranet called an extranet. Still private but it expands their coverage area.

Hope this helps.
