If I've had a good couple of interviews with a company, I'll usually ask directly what's the next step in the process: will they contact me, should I contact them, who should I call back, do they have many more candidates to consider, etc. Likewise, most interviewers want to know from me if I'm available immediately, if I need to give a couple of week's notice, etc.

If these items have not been addressed, I'd give it a week before I called back to follow up. At that point, make sure you do get an understanding of what to expect as far as timing.

Unfortunately, these days many potential employers will simply not call you back if they're not interested. So don't wait by the phone indefinitely waiting for their response. And if you have other prospects, continue with all of them until you've accepted a position. Remember - just because you get an offer doesn't mean you have to accept it. Right now, you're trying to get as many good offers as you can. Good luck.

If you haven't sent a thank you note to the recruiter, hiring manager, or whomever you interviewed with, you probably should. If the recruiter or hiring manager spoke to you last and didn't say anything about their hiring practices, like when you could expect to hear back from them; call the recruiter or hiring manager and ask. Let the employer know that you're still interested.

If you are still interested, six days is too long to have waited without following up yourself. Don't always expect the employer to be proactive about following up if it's a job that you want.

It depends on what kind of job you are applying for.
i would call and introduce yourself again and find out if the position was filled and if not let them know that you are still interested and wanted to know the statis of your application.
