...because it's fun !
You can learn about different cultures or city's. You can go on an adventure.Try new food.Meet new people.
Why would you want to stay and look at the same four walls every day of your life till you just drop dead ?

I've spend most of my life having holidays in the UK and its always cost a fortune simply because the hotels here charge the earth, all the entertainment and fun things to do cost a fortune too, now I go abroad and believe it or not I actually save money by doing so.

I like going on trips and if I had more money, I would take a nice, expensive trip every year to see new things and experience different parts of the world. I find exploring to be the best kind of relaxation.
Yes, I think money should be spent on the home for repairs and general maintenance, however, family memories are made on trips and that's what makes holidays/vacations just as important as fixing the roof, etc.
However, I think it's nice to stay at home for at least one week of my vacation/holiday time just to get caught up with things around the house and unwind. I don't think it's always essential to spend a fortune on a trip to have a good time with your loved ones. People can find quality things to do with one another in their own backyard.

Because it's a treat that you deserve after all that hard work throughout the year! I prefer to spend money on clothes and shoes, but somewhere to wear them would be nice so a holiday is a good excuse to wear what I've bought, so that means spending a fortune before you get there and spending a fortune in being there as you're on holiday cos you deserve it!

Others have mentioned the various reasons. I think that for those who can afford holidays it is wonderful, if the want to spend the money.
I am much like my parents: I would rather spend the money on my home or in other ways that last longer than for the time of holiday and holiday memories.

If you have the money spare, then it is nice to be able to visit and experience other parts of the world and learn about other cultures etc. I dont have as much fun on holiday in the UK as it works out more expensive and the weather is unpredictable and for the most part - pants!
There is more to the World than the UK.

Many peoples work is tedious and they need a serious change of scenery ,
And home is full of chores that have not been done because they were too busy working .
Smart persons go far away but spend small amounts.
If you really get a change of scenery , then just walking around beaches and tropical towns is wonderful.
Cost : airfare and private room at youth hostel
or local lodging ( maybe $30 USD / nite )

Going away for a holiday gives one the opportunity to see and enjoy another part of the world, meet new people and experience new things. Sometimes, even the same things taste different in new surroundings (dying love have been known to be rekindled in different settings).
Going on holiday is therapy for the mind and body.

You can not guarantee good weather in this country (UK) so we spend a lot to up the chances off a week in the sun, We equate sun with holiday, so the hotter the beach the better the holiday!

Hardly. I have just returned from SA. The sun was shining, it was brilliant. The food great, the meat the best and the beaches clean and the water tepid. Loved it. I could not do that here in UK and sadly returned yesterday to stare into the back of other peoples homes again . Ohhhhh woeeee is meee, woee is meeeee. :)))
