I have been working with a realtor for a few months now. During one of our property tours, I was surprised that she had already divulged my husband's lucrative profession to the listing agent before I arrived on the scene. Is this normal practice? If the listing agent becomes aware of the buyer's comfortable financial status, would this in any way prevent them from negotiating the price of the property to the buyer's comfort zone?

It's not wrong to disclose someones profession to the seller. There are broke doctors and rich janitors out there. The realtor may have helped you get the deal by edging out another more qualified buyer.

It would be different if she went and told the seller your actual maximum sales price upfront.

A client's ability to purchase a property is not a guarantee to purchase that property. I work with people of all incomes. Some listing agents with properties over $800,000 want to know that the potential Buyer has the ability to purchase so that no one's time is wasted. Some Sellers don't want unqualified persons walking through their homes just for the heck of it. In fact, they may require the listing agent to be present, even if a Buyer's Agent will be present.

The Realtor works for you, and should be trying to get you the very best deal. Unless, of course, you agreed to one Realtor representing both you and the seller.....at any rate, he/she should divulge nothing that you have not given permission for.

Legality I'm not sure of. But very tasteless and tacky. She is either very new at the profession, part time or just stupid. Yes, it will make negotiating very difficult. Find another realtor today. And tell her why you fired her

I worked with Realtors and for the most part they are scummy people. They have no respect for anyone or anyone privacy. As long as they are padding their pocket they don't care who they step on in the process. I would either report the incident to the local realtor board in which they are registered...and if it isn't handled from there report it to NAR (national assoc of realtors)
