I have always used a foundation brush for my liquid foundation. It saves the makeup, as it doesn't get absorbed into the sponge and it spreads more evenly. When using a brush you have more precision, but you have to be careful or the bristles may leave lines of makeup, so you have to apply it with this pattern: Brush up, brush down, brush left, brush right and repeat if there are still a few lines.
My brush is from Merle Norman, it cost around $20.
MAC has a high quality foundation brush for around $32.

The purpose of a foundation brush is to help give you smooth, even coverage on your entire face. Plus the brush does not absorb your foundation like a sponge does. (Using a sponge absorbs lots of your foundation so you use lots more of it quickly.)
Brushes are great to use with all your cosmetic applications. The right tools make everything better!
It is better to use a good one & not just the least expensive. In the long run, it will cost you less. I have used the same brush for almost 5 years, with daily use and frequent cleansing & it is still in like new condition. The one I use is by bare Minerals, but there are lots of good ones out there. Studio Gear makes a great one and they have a life time guarantee if it wears out. Sephora's line of brushes are good too.
Give a brush a try, you will probably like it a lot. Your bottle of foundation will last longer & you will like the coverage of a brush. Just put a bit of foundation on the brush and lightly brush on & this is it you have on foundation! Good luck. If you have more questions, you can e-mail me.

Brushes are the cleanest thing to use. Sponges absorb up to 40% of your foundation in the long run, fingers are ok, but you better make sure that they are clean and sanitized so you don't spread bacteria which could lead to breakouts. But with a brush you get an even, smooth, and most important a hygenic application. Try this little test to prove my point. First, take a mirror and lay it down flat. Place 3 dallops of liquid foundation on the mirror in separate spots. take a sponge and run it thru the 1st dallop. then take your fingers and run it thru the 2nd. take a brush and try it on the 3rd. See a difference? now what would you prefer to have on your face?....If you don't have a brush in your possesion, you can go to a local Sephora and ask them to show you how this little test works. Remember that Sephora offers consultations and can actually apply the foundation to your skin with a brush so you can see first hand how well it works. Good luck hope this helped!

Using a foundation brush gives you light, even coverage; brushes also absorb less foundation than sponges. I always dab the foundation on with my fingers, then spread it with the brush, and just blend the edges with my fingers for the best coverage. I was amazed at how much better my liquid foundation went on when I used a brush. They're worth the investment! Sephora makes nice ones.

I would not use a brush for liquid foundation - the biggest reason is that liquid foundation should be applied gently by dabbing and softly sweeping the foundation in the right direction so not to pull on the delicate skin - especially around your eyes. The brush would not give you the same control - I would stick with using my fingers or the sponge.

i would deffinitely suggest using a stippling brush, it gives a more even application and its easier to use! to use the stippling brush, add some foundation onto the top of your hand and dab some on with your brush then dab some of it over your face then start literally just stippling over your face and you can also use circular motions. if that isnt a good enough description then just youtube how to use a stippling brush. theres ton of videos for a foundation brush, i would pour some onto the hand again and take some from your hand onto the brush then just put it on your face and apply it like how you would as painting... but make sure your moving it outwards, and you can also use a circular motion too. if you need to see an example just youtube (: hope this helped!

As stated by others before me, the purpose of any makeup brush is for precision application. You'll use up to 50% less product, which will easily pay for the cost of the brush. Plus, who wants to have to scrub their fingers (ugh) or have a nasty sponge absorbing all their product? Yuck!
For applying any liquids, such as concealer and foundation, use a brush made from synthetic materials. For "dry" products, such as shadows and blushers, use something made from "real" materials; such as faux animal fur. Sephora has great ones. Your drugstore will carry decent ones for your synthetic brushes, but I've had bad luck using their ones for dry powers.
Use whatever facial cleanser you use to clean your brushes, too. Something too harsh can iritate your skin, causing a rash. Lay them out to dry, don't stand them up. The water will drip back down into the base, causing the glue holding the bristles in place to loosen and you to replace your brushes sooner. Of course, clean each brush after each use.
After 6 months to a year, all of your brushes should be replaced. Reason being, they tend to carry some of the most disgusting bacteria.
