Its called Grease for both reasons. If you listen to the words to the theme song it imply both and possibly other things as well. If you ever watch the movie it shows that too. One of the best movies ever :-). Grease is the word... is the word.. that you heard.. its got groove...its got meaning... Now you have me singing it :-). I might have to rent it now! :-)

Pretty sure its because of the Grease in their hair. At the beginning credits with the cartoon the squeeze tube of grease is what spells out the title of the movie and they are also always combing their hair etc.. BUT it was also a group the "Greasers" just like the "jocks" and "preps" , just something they were called by

actually since it was set in the 1950s, it would have to be because of not only the hair but also the clothes style, in the 50s the guys were called "greasers" with the greasy hair and the motorcycles and stuff. their idols were of course, Elvis, Marlon Brando and James Dean to name a few. But thats the reason its called Grease, and if you grew up in the 1970s the 50s were making a slight comeback with the shows "Happy days" and "Laverne & Shirley" etc.

It was the greasy hair. One of the old posters from the play was the back of a leather jacket topped by the back of a guy's head whose hair was loaded with grease and formed into a ducktail.

It is a slang term Greaser was used to define certain sorts of guys. Usually guys who were not considered to be Preppy or Jocks or Nerdy. They often were rebellious & members of groups or gangs who had the Elvis or James Dean wanna be thing going on. Definately the Grease in the hair. Great old movie.

Its based on the style and nature of the characters. As in, the leather jackets, sunglasses and yes, the grease they use to comb their hair back. They're called Greasers. Its like a fashion trend, such as emo's, chav's and goths etc. You tend to find Greasers in America though.

Neither. Grease was a fertility symbol as seen with all the seductive dancing and male / female sexual bonding.
