I install windows vista 32 ultimate. The drive worked properly for 2 weeks until vista locked and required a hard reboot. The computer would not boot with the USB 2.0 EXTERNAL drive so I removed it and everything worked properly; however, I need the data on the drive. The power to the drive looks fine and the computer actually pauses to recognize it however, it does not show up in "My Computer" tried hooking it to a laptop and it pauses also but doesn't recognize it there either. Please advise.

Try accessing the external drive from another PC.
Vista has obviously made its own decision about that drive.

It saw something on it that it did not like.....

Check computer management and see if it is showing up as an unformatted drive. If it is showing up as unformatted or unknown format, your data is history. Also check in Device Manager to see if it showing up in USB devices. If it is not in either of these locations it sounds like the drive or enclosure are bad. In your case since you need the data, try a new enclosure. If this does not fix the problem, then it is the drive. I went from least expensive to most expensive, and if it is the drive you've lost your data. .
