It was a beautiful Spring morning as Matt strolled over to the Longbranch for a cup of coffee. His longtime lady friend,Miss Kitty Russell, was just pouring herself a cup, when she looked up and saw Matt's large frame fill the doorway. "Good morning,cowboy." Matt smiled and took a seat. As they sat there they talked about the good old days......when Matt first came to town and tamed what was then, an oasis for gunslingers and tramps. ""Thanks to you,Matt, there is law and order." Matt shrugged in modesty. Just then they heard a commotion outside. Matt got up to investigate.
A few cowpokes were teasing a young lady who had arrived just that morning, on the stagecoach. "What's going on here," quired Matt? "Just a little fun,Marshal Dillon. Nothing for you to get your feathers all ruffled about." as that one man tried to grab the lady, Matt pulled him away. "Leave her alone,mister!" The man took a swing at Matt but missed,of course. Matt swung back and didn't!!! After he showed them out of town, Matt turned to the lady. "It's ok ,miss. They won't be bothering you any more." She smiled and looked up at him. (He is 6'7",you know)Then he really got a good look at her. They locked eyes. Both lost in a world of their own. Unfortunately for all involved, Kitty witnessed all of this.
"Matt...MATT!!!" Matt slowly looked at Kitty. "Yes?" "Come on, let's finish our coffee." She put her arm through his . The gesture was not lost on the lady. Matt stopped and said: "Would you like to join us,maam?" "Why yes,I'd love to." "That's okay with you,right, Kitty?" "Just peachy," muttered Kitty as they all made their way into the Longbranch.
Over a pot of coffee, they learned that Sunshine was her name. Kitty was growing uneasier by the moment. Matt seemed to be in a daze. Finally she said: "Well, nice meeting you,Sunshine. Welcome to Dodge." As somebody caught Matt's attention for a second, Kitty looked hard into Sunshine's eyes....."He's MINE,sister and don't you EVER forget it!!" Matt turned back to the two women, having missed this last bit by Kitty. "What's that,Kitty?" "Oh,nothing,I was just welcoming our new friend to Dodge City." Sunshine got up and explained she had lots to do that day. She curtsied to Matt and thanked him again for his assistance. Matt smiled broadly. You know that smile of his.....(GAWD!!) Kitty,on the other hand was fuming.
Kitty looked at Matt with such anger in her eyes that it startled him. "What's wrong,Kitty?" "YOU!!! THAT'S what is wrong!!" She stormed off,leaving poor Matt to figure out what was going on. Old Doc sauntered over. "Don't just stand there like an idiot. Go after her and apologize." "Apologize?! what for," asked Matt. Doc then explained to Matt what was obvious to everyone else in the room. "JEALOUS?? Kitty??
Don't be ridiculous," laughed Matt as he left the Longbranch to go on his daily rounds.
As he strolled up and down Main street, Matt couldn't stop thinking about Sunshine. More than once he bumped into a passerby as he fantasized. "Hmmmmm......I'll bet she can really...." Just then he ran straight into a hitching post. As he straightened himself up, he hoped no one had noticed his clumsiness. Well, one person did notice....little ole Sunshine was watching him through the window of the bank. She laughed out loud as she saw him try to quickly gather himself up.
She went outside. Ostensibly to go on errands. (The females reading this know all about this type of ploy!!) To the untrained eye she just HAPPENED to be where Matt was headed. (I do this ALL the time,myself.) Anyway, as Matt walked on, he saw her. In his excitement, he tripped over box that was laying in the road. "Damn it," he muttered. "You okay, Marshal,"querried Sunshine? As they faced each other, Matt's heart started to pound!! To the townsfolk who were watching, he appeared dumbstruck. Here's the deal...he was.
