Two important thing to do if you want to be sucessful keeping fish: 1. Get a decent aquarium book and read it before you start. 2. don't use a bowl. Get the largest tank you can and at least 10 gallons. Just starting with those two things will get you well on the right track.

MM is right. no bowl makes a good home for a fish. however, I know how people think, and chances are you're dead set on having a bowl and think "well they sell bowls and I know people keep fish in them, so you guys are wrong" or one of those "it's ridiculous to keep 1 goldfish in a 20gallon tank, no one does that" ... and people who think that way are sadly right to a point. they do sell bowls, and people do use them, but they aren't very good for healthy keeping HEALTHY fish. also, most people don't keep a goldfish in a 20gallon tank, but that doens't mean they aren't hurting the fish by not keeping it in the right sized tank. just because a lot of peopel do it doens't mean it's okay.

you CAN keep a betta healthily in a bowl, but you must follow these instructions completely. especially the frequent water changes. you can't be lazy about changing the water.

that being said, if you mind is set on a bowl, there is only one fish you can keep slighly healthily in a bowl. but you'll need a bowl of at least 2.5gallons, a hydor mini heater (7.5watts), a thermometer, and a turkey baster. you if you can find a filter for it that would be good too. so once you have the heater, bowl and thermometer fill the bowl with conditioned water (water conditioner to remove chemicals, and I also recommend adding a 1/2 teaspoon of aquarium salt for ever gallon of water) and put the heater in. monitor the temp for a day to make sure it stays at a good stead temp of about 78°F to 80°F. once it's stayed the same temp for at least 5hrs straight you can add one betta. I would also advise you keep a silk plant in with him. the turkey baster should be used once a day to suck 20% of the water from the bottom of the bowl. replace with clean conditioned water. do full water changes once or twice a week, no less.

if you think this sounds like too much work a bowl is not a good choice for you. a bowl is a LOT more work than an actual tank.

That's a toughie since you're insisting on a fish bowl. If you want them not to die, I would recommend a fish tank, you can get them fairly inexpensively, and save money by not killing off the fish. Bettas can sometimes survive in a large fish bowl, but definitely not goldfish, and the water would get dirty fast and probably need changed, for any fish, at least a every other day, especially if it's not filtered.

A fish bowl is small so there for you cant have fishes only a single fish for it to survive and be healthy, if you want more then one fish buy a 10 gallon aquarium then you can successfully have lots of fish~

All fish tanks are the same, doesn't matter size, they all require the same amount of care; clean water, oxygen, food, shelter (plants to hide in, large hollow rocks, trees...they sell all this stuff at a pet shop), some fish require heat, others don't.
You need to do some research on the fish you have or the fish you want to own in order to determine what that or those particular fish, or fishes need~

Just because they are fish doesn't mean they are easy to care for~

Depends what kind of fish that you are putting in the bowl, all fish except the Betta, need a pump to aerate the water. Just make sure that the fish are compatible and won't eat each other. Either let the water set for a few days or buy Spring water, the water should be room, temperature to keep the fish from going into shock

I'm sorry but everyone above is completely right, your poor fish must have suffered terribly. They need a proper sized tank and good filtration system at minimum. But you didn't know and you'll do things right next time if you're serious about keeping fish and taking good care of them. A happy playful goldfish kept in proper conditions is such a delight to watch and a pleasure for the fishkeeper. Not sure why you were recommended hydrogen peroxide, I think its a rarely used treatment (to be dosed with extreme caution!!) for algae- kind of the last thing you needed to worry about at the beginning! If you want to keep fish do a good few weeks of reading and researching first before you go out and buy a tank.

Keeping fish in a bowl is a cruel thing, to begin with.
The city of Rome banned fish bowls because they are inhuman.
If you want your fish to be happy n healthy, get a tank. Be careful about overcrowding. The rule is one gallon per fish or something like that.
All the other equipment like heaters, air pumps, etc depend on the kind of fish you're looking at.

Please don't keep your fish in a bowl, the only fish I know of that can even live in a bowl is a betta. Save yourself many dead fish and by an aquarium.

bowls are for food
and as said on finding nemo "fish are friends, no food"

The only fish that don't need air pumped in is Betta and Gold fish. With the Betta you want only one male and 5 to 10 females or the male by himself. The Betta will attack and kill another male and some even the females.
