I would recommend going through Bangkok first and then catching Thai Air to your destination in Vietnam.

What do you mean? Of course, you can go there by air! As for going South or North first, well South is suggested. Start with Ho Chi Minh City where you can see the War Museum and visit the place where the Americans had heel of a time fighting a gorilla war and were eventually miserably defeated! Do visit a place called Cuchi and experience the bunkers (still intact) originally used by the tiny (small build) Vietnamese soldiers! By the way people in Vietnam are pretty young , most of the elders having been perished in the war! Though they may be economically impoverished, the people are friendly and you will definitely adore and admire the Vietnamese beauty! By the way, Vietnamese airlines fly to most cities around the world now and their service is reportedly 'above average'!

During the winter, I'd recommend visit the North (of Vietnam) first as it's much cooler there than the South and hence, would provide you with a more gradual transition from our climate in North America and Europe. However, from now (late March) until late September, it's rather warm in the North too so it really makes little difference climate-wise whether you start your tour of Vietnam in the North (Hanoi) or in the South (HCM City).
The only difference it may make is in the international airfare. You should price out the option of flying into Vietnam via HCM City and leaving via Hanoi vs. the other way around. Another difference is that within Vietnam, the North-South traffic is a bit heavier than the South-North one (there're more folks going South than going North) but that may not be a significant factor in your travel as a tourist.

A wide open question. You can start either from the North (HaNoi) or the South (SaiGon) or even a few flights into the centre of the country (DaNang). Read up and you can decide on the direction you would like to go. We usually go from SaiGon and north. We then spend a month in the Centre of Vietnam in Hue City. Cheers

If you're just going to Vietnam you can be there from the US West Coast in less than 18 hours. Check foreign airlines for good fares. Summer (Hot) is the high season - airfares are higher than winter (Cool). If you're touring start in Hanoi and work your way south. Be sure to visit Halong Bay. Hue, Hoian, Nha Trang, Dalat and Saigon are on your way south. "Saigon - 8 million people, 4 million motorbikes." The scenery, food, bargains and people are great. Take a reliable digital camera. Good Luck!

I hope you will go and stay in Hochiminh city first, you can enjoy everything from this place, you don't have to travel too far. After long trip, you need rest and then visit the zoo, locates at the centre of city, lots of interesting entertainments around there, and also you can enjoy hundreds different delicious food around Ben Thanh Market, after that you can go further , also don't forget go to Vung Tau beach, if you have more energy you can go to North Vietnam.....
Enjoy your holiday
