Everyone that minded go and live in France, and if they follow the French have ways of dealing with parasites, as for the sick royalist sycophants that want to keep them, they will then be able to pay the full upkeep for them, and would not be long before some of them changed their views.

I live in Canada and am in favour of becoming strictly non-monarchial. There are several problems with this though, there'd be quite a costly restructure of government and rebalancing of power. And this is obviously something of great importance, the balanve that is.

Right now, the monarch is pretty much a big nothing, just a figurehead. A little bit of overhead cost. So it's not a pressing concern, it's just a symbolic thing to get rid of it. I had read an article by someone whose name I forget who suggested that if we ever wanted to disassociate from the crown the Privy Council could just refuse to crown the next monarch. That'd require no restructuring, but it does leave the PM with a lot of power. Even though the checks the governor general is part of are pretty much symbolic, it may still function as a psychological restraint on the PM. So I'm not too sure how I feel about that idea.

Dadu, there is no Monarchy any how in Britain. Where did you get your history lessons from? Every one knows that Britain has a different social structure. I do not think it's democratic, I rather would say is a socialistic state of affair. So monarchy hasn't excisted for a long long time. They are just putting up with them cause they bring in money in form of tourismus.

Since the Royal Family have no political power and any President would likely cost just as much, what would be the point?

Personally I think a President would be worse. I'd rather live with the Queen than Bush. Besides, she doesn't really have much power nowadays anyway.

They have been around for a thousand years, and they aren't likely to leave. England overthrew its monarchy once, and having a dictator turned out to be even worse, so they were invited back. I think they are here to stay.

If you want to rant, there's always Tony Blair and Bush.
