Both ticks and mites belong to the arachnid Order Acarina (or Acari). The ticks are a small
group of a few hundred species, out of over
30,000 species in the Order. They have the
tarsus of the pedipalp (a short pair of appendages anterior to the legs and behind the
jaws) without a claw, and a piercing organ
below the jaws, armed with backward-pointing
teeth. All ticks belong to the Suborder Ixodida,
the rest of the Order, the mites, belong to half a dozen
other Suborders.

Ticks are all ectoparasitic, like mosquitoes taking a blood meal from some host, normally
a vertebrate animal of some kind. Most ticks
are larger than most mites, though there is some
size overlap. Some mites, chiggers for example, also parasitise other
animals, including vertebrates and invertebrates.

Ticks And Mites

They are both closely related, but ticks are larger (depending on how well fed, they can be much larger).
Ticks are also ectoparasites, latching onto a host and feeding on their blood. There are about 800 different types of ticks known.
Mites are more more diverse, with more than 30,000 known types. While there are some species of mites that are parasitic, most species are free-ranging predators that can be found in virtually any habitat.

Ticks do not live on their host. They take one blood meal and fall off. Mites are very tiny and often live on earwax or other bodily secretions. Lice live in and around hair folicles and can breed on the human body.
