Hi, my 4 month old has a cold. His has a runny nose, he coughs a little but, and last night he had a bit of a fever – 101.7. I am not a big fan of giving little babies medication, especially Tylenol since I read how it can cause liver damage. However, after a few hours i realized that the fever was not going away I had to succumb to my fears and give him a dose of infant Tylenol for lack of better options. Do you have an alternative ways of treating a common baby cold that doesn’t include strong medication or at least doesn’t include Tylenol as the primary means of treatment?
Thank you

If he doesnt get better today, I have him in daycare so I am waiting to hear how he is doing, I will take him to the doctor. I am not against pediatrician's advice, of course they know best, i just want to know what to do when this happens on the weekends as it did.

I use johnsons vapor bath with luke arm water and vicks baby vapor rub after bath. Also a good suctioning of the nose twice a day along with little noses saline drops and nose moisturizer. Though you don't like tylenol it does offer some comfort for your baby maybe before bedtime to offer some comfort when there is no fever other wise with fever give as you have. Babies usually can't have cold medicine until 6 months of age even if you wanted to give it to your baby.

rub some vicks baby rub on his chest and make sure you constantly suck out his nose with a bulb syringe. this will prevent the cough from getting any worse. the fever is just trying to fight off the sickness, and i have been told anything under 102 is okay. i wouldnt give tylenol unless if he seems uncomfortable from the fever. otherwise just keep him in light clothing to keep him from getting any warmer and keep an eye on his temperature. i know its hard but he really shouldnt be in daycare when he is sick, now the other kids will get it and pass it around. :(

A baby of that age with that high of a fever should be seen by a doctor. It could be the flu. Common colds generally do not come with a fever of 101.7.

just give infant Tylenol for fever and use a suction bulb to remove mucus. there have been too many cases of babies dying from the OTC cold medicines call your pediatrician before you give your baby anything.

please wait until the doctor lets you know what dosage to give the baby for any OTC medication. it all depends on weight!! and yes you can overdose a baby! cool bath - cold compress - no blankets and light clothing are good. fevers aren't really damaging until they hit +103 degrees and last for more than a few days. we understand side affects, but remember your baby is suffering just like you would if you had the cold ... but he relies on you to comfort him and treat him. if you cannot get him to a doctor a pharmacist might help you with dosage.

Ooh you should bring them to the pediatrics center, because it may look like a cold, but it could be an ear infection or a swollen gland or worse.

I think a best natural way for babies is to give him warm fruit tea with some rasberry jam or give him some natural tea.
