It depends on how important the relationship is to me. Violence is rarely the answer, unless there is some reason to believe that the person poses a real threat to my safety, or that of my family. Usually I cannot completely ignore the situation, but talking does not always work either. True hate is an irrational emotion. Generally I choose to limit contact and be civil when circumstances do not provide for other alternatives. Ultimately I do not care if people like me or not, but I will always strive for harmony before seeking discord.

Actually, it is #1. Only when one takes direct action and standing your ground is there able to be real dialogue. Conflict, followed by real resolution is the history of the world, and how it was advanced.

Talking doesn't change minds. It just makes them think you're a coward and an idiot. Think 1930's Europe, all that diplomacy that culminated with the worst dishonor, the Munich Accords. Remember what Churchill said about that.

Ignoring them won't change their minds either.

For any regular person, #3 Ignore them. It's their problem.

But....The story changes if the haters are a threat to you or other innocent people. Then, you defend yourself and/or protect the innocent via trained professionals (the police, the military).

I think i "get" why you are asking this...

You won't change their mind. So you have the problem of will they act on their hatred if you think they might you either wait until they do and hope you survive or do something to make it impossible to act.

You shouldn't worry about what other people think. Be yourself and if you are right, your point of view will win out in the long run.
