The exclamation mark is for your parking brake.

The second dipstick next to your oil is for your automatic transmission. To check it you should

1 Have the engine running
2 Move the gear lever slowly down all the gears and then slowly return it to Park
3. Check fluid level (with engine still running)

There is no tank, it goes straight into the gearbox and the only way to fill it is to pour the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) down the dipstick tube, use a funnel to minimise spillage.

The gearbox does not take fuel.
It does contain oil - but as a lubricant (and a hydraulic fluid in automatics) not as a fuel.

An exclamation light is more likely to be brake-related.
Have you checked the brake fluid and the wear of the brake pads?

Pajero iO 1.8 litre. Around year 2000.
There would appear to be two smallish fuel tanks (both shielded) just in front of the rear axle. Any thoughts?
Also, how to tighten the power steering belt? Power steering cuts out briefly after going through deep water, which can be something of an issue.

Probably best to find a manual for it, try eBay.
