Honey, if you are the one showing off your "exotic"status then you are bound to have people staring at you. Well, there are different reasons people stare but it's not just in India try behaving like this on the streets of London or Paris wearing a heavily embroidered lehenga and you'll have ample people enjoying the show.
NRIs are no new thing, at least in big cities like Mumbai and Delhi and every second Indian is running to the States so what's new?

You are mistaking, they dont stare at you when you come back from USA, they stare at you when you come from USA because of your complexion. And It does not happen everywhere in India.

It happens with a lot of third world and under developed countries. People can tell that you have been to a foreign land and are fascinated by the fact that you have been on a plane, seen all sorts of new people, eaten all sorts of fancy foods, and smell like all sorts of sweetness. They are just in awe of how different and cool you look.

u r wrong. it is just the opposite. those who return from US want everyone to know tht they hv been to US and are anxious to be noticed by one and all as they feel it is a great thing to hv gone to US!
those who return frm abroad dress weird and shabby and talk with phony accent and act funny and superior! they ape yankies in their way of dressing , talk ,eating and gestures!
and they drink only botteld water and phoo phoo at the indian climate and environment and act as if they are from a different planet and forget tht their roots were in india!
hence they may be attracting some attention as weirdos!

I get that when I went to Pakistan like 15 years ago (Never went again). I think its the way you dress (well I think that did it for me). They just know if you're an outsider - My guess they're curious.... Not sure if thats in a good way or bad.

Not now a days. And never in future. Fish cultivators in remote AndhraPradesh are most frequent fliers to America.
