Its the software that needs to be reinstalled, I had the same problem, I messed with the drivers, the jumpers on the drive and lots of other things, But in the end I just I installed My PowerDVD, and it worked again. Your software might still be in the start menu, After you know what its called, Do a system search for the .exe of the dvd program, find the file and Right click it, and select copy then paste it to your documents folder. Then go to the control panel and uninstall it, reboot, then double click the exe that you copied.

try using Windows restore function. You will find this under Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools. You will be presented with a calendar of possible points where you can restore back to. Pick a date where you know the DVD was working. Note this will only work if the restore function is switched on and in general this is so by default. Good Luck.

Hi

Is the cd exchangeable , that is you can take it out ? If so , then boot and load windows , then shutdown and put it back again, Then try this , open start then run then type cmd and on the black windows write cd d:\ if it gives you an error saying cannot find or no cd or whatever error it means the systemboard IS NOT viewing the cd , now boot again and enter the bios , verify that the system board DOES see the cd
