I am still in the dark ages with my laptop and dial-up connectivity. I will be traveling in a little over a month and staying at a hotel that offers a high speed connection (additional fee, of course). What hardware and software do I need to allow me to take advantage of this? Do I need service from an ISP (or similar) to use this feature?

You'll need at least a 500mHz processor, ample amount of RAM (128 at least), and a wireless LAN or Wi-Fi antenna or both because the service might require either of the two for wireless connection.. buff up the specs a bit to get the best experience.. a browser is the only software you'll need, the clerk at the hotel's information desk will help you configure your laptop..

For wired, you will need a LAN port or CAT5 connector but all 5-star luxury hotels have gone wireless.. Try to look for wireless or wired adapters for the hardwares I mentioned that go into your USB port (or NIC PC Card for PCMCIA slot specifically an HSDPA card, if you want but I suggest going USB), that way you can just plug in what you will need for the HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access)..

Better yet, call the hotel and inquire about the specifics of the service you would want to know.. They would gladly tell you what they have to offer regarding the HSDPA service and then check your hardware for what you will need to bring along with you..

Bon Voyage!

Well if your laptop doesn't have either wireless or a CAT 5 connection you can purchase either one as a PC card (goes in the side of your laptop and will come with whatever software is required) and no, you won't need service from an ISP

No you dont need any ISP or anything... If your laptop has wireless inbuilt then you dont need to take anything.... Some hotels just provide you with wireless, no wired... So most laptops have a LAN port (For wired connection), Find out from your hotel guys if they have a wired and wireless service or just wireless...

All the best...

What laptop model do you have?
Most of the laptops sold have an ethernet port, and a wireless card built in, you should not need any additional hardware at all if you have these built in.....I just need to know what model you have, located underneath the computer, you can email me, or use yahoo messenger for quicker results.....

If you are using wireless...None. The hotel should supply you with everything you need (if anything)...at least from my experiences.

If the hotel has a CAT 5 connection, then you will need that same connection available on your laptop. If you don't have one, you will need to buy a PCMCIA Network Interface Card (NIC card).
