Lets face it, there have always been costs associated with labor. With slaves , the owner had to feed, clothe and house them as well as provide health care to protect his investment. If the owner was a good owner these costs increased in order to keep the slaves from running away (George Washington and Mount Vernon). Today I am a bossman in a small American sweatshop. Our company recruits foriegn workers and sponsors them to come and live here legally in the states. Once they are here we put them up in some crappy little apartment close to the shop within walking distance. Then I work them half to death for sub-minimum wage with the threat of deportation always over their head. They put up with it. They are happy to be "American Residents". Better than sleeping on a dirt floor. Any American worker would have shot me for expecting them work like these immigrants do. God bless America, the land of the opportunist. P.S. Slavery never really ended in the white black context. It has just been morphing from one form to the other into sophisticated forms of slavery.

First of all I am suspect to your story, there are a few inconsistencies. Secondly, if what you are saying is true than shame on you for being a total jerk. Just because someone works for you is no right for you to treat them less than human. It doesn't matter if they are immigrants or citizens they are all people and are under the jurisdiction of the labor laws. I am an employer and take pride in my employees and would never think of abusing or taking advantage of them. I you can't run your business without screwing your employees then get out of the business because your not doing a service to any one but yourself. The statement of how much everything will cost the public at large if you pay a fair wage is bull, the rest of the world seems to be doing it. I think the fact that you have made the comparison with slavery shows how misguided your approach to being an employer really is.

An employee doesn't absolutely have to work where he or she doesn't want to. Slaves had no such choice. It's as simple as that, in spite of your vitriolic rhetoric.

THIS TYPE OF SLAVERY WAS OPEN TO KINGS IN VILLAGES THAT ALLOW SLAVES TO MARRY INTO THEIR SOCIETY AND BE A PRODUCTIVE HUMAN BEINGS.
