Honesty on the part of the two characters is an important issue here. Had madam loisel (Is this owner's name?)been honest enough to tell mathilde (is this her name?) that her necklace was fake, then mathilde(?) would not have experienced so much poverty. On the other hand, had mathilde(?) been honest enough to tell her friend that she lost the necklace before she replaced it, then she would not have bought the real diamond necklace and experienced such hardship in life.

But for me, the real issue here is mathilde's(?) attitude and unreasonable desire to be rich and famous and to be accepted in their world.
