My daughter just sprouted a tooth at 8 months. It's a cute little snaggletooth too. I've been told that now I must practice oral care. I'm having two problems: she doesn't want anything in her mouth (I try taking a damp washcloth and since she's teething she sometimes lets me put it in) and she has a before bed nursing session that gets her nice and dreamy. Advice welcomed. Thank you!

Baby toothbrushes work well- ones with very small heads and soft bristles (no more than 3 rows). There are finger brushes too, but your baby might chomp down on it a little too hard (mine did and she got a loud yelp from me). Water on the brush is just fine. You can also use a soft wash cloth to wipe her teeth and tongue. The important thing is to be consistent to instill a good habit in her.

At that age, I frequently just used a wet baby washcloth. I would just get the washcloth wet and wrap it around my finger. Then I would clean the front and back of all my son's teeth and his gums where there still weren't teeth. At age 3, he now still has great teeth so it obviously did the trick. I just felt it was easier to use than a baby toothbrush at that age and it all did the same thing.

There is baby toothpaste that actually comes with a finger brush - I believe it's by Orajel and you can get it at Target, BRU or any place that carries baby supplies. The toothpaste is clear and you put the brush on your finger and are able to brush their gums/teeth. Most babies actually like it.

You can use some guaze wrapped around your finger and genty rub her teeth and gums to remove the milk.

Always try to remove the milk after she eats because milk does rot the teeth!

You can buy soft baby toothbrushes...she will probably let you put it in when she sees that it feels so good on her gums.
