I am trying to buy a refurbished Dell just as a second computer and I'm trying to figure out if it has enough space. The listing says 10 GB and 256 MB. What does that mean? It doesn't have a CD or DVD burner so I won't be taking up space with movies, picutres, or music. It's pretty much just for surfing the net, a few computer games, and doing research. Can somebody help me out...please?

It means 10Gb storage on hard drive and 256Mb of memory

dont spend more than 100 on it It will do for web surfing and research but not with xp.

If it has 2000 it thats fine. Xp needs more than 256Mb of memory to run well.

Just load linux on it like freespire and it will run great.

Xp will take about 4 Gigabytes out of that 10 so really you don't have much to play with. but it will do for surfing and research. itll fit about 4games with office and antivirus. and 100mb left over for docs.

Games these days take over a Gb a piece but I doubt you will be playing the latest and greatest soo about 250 per is all Im estimating.

Oh and you really don't want to use all of the free space leave about 2Gigs or it get dog slow.

so what you end up with is about 4 gigs for all of your software , games, music, pictures, and documents.

Apparently the 10 GB [gigabytes] refers to the size of the hard drive, where the operating system is installed and where other programs and data get installed. And the 256 MB [megabytes] refers to the size of the RAM [random access memory].

Not having a CD or DVD burner does nothing to prevent you from using up space - you can use up 10 GB of space with pictures and programs and documents, etc.

The computer in other words does not have a lot of hard drive space, but the thing will indeed surf the net and do email and will play games like solitaire or mah jhongg or minefield, no problem.

Just don't spend a lot of money on it.....

10GB is the Hard disk space ( this space is used to store all the files like Windows related files, Your documents, Any music files etc etc.) the 256MB is the RAM memory.. 256MB is really low in todays world.. This 256MB RAM takes a major part in how your system performs... the more RAM you have the more faster it will be...

I guess if its just for surfing the internet, it should be ok to buy this computer.. But its worth investing a few more bucks on upgrading the RAM to atleast 512MB....

All the best...

For the smoothest operation I recommend a minimum of 512 ram and at least a 40 GB hard drive.

that probably means 10GB of hard drive space and 256MB of RAM. that setup sucks. my dad's computer is from like 10 years ago and it has a 16 GB hard drive. look for something with at least 60GB of hard disk space and 1GB of RAM.
