I was supposed to have my lower back fused in one, if not two, spots, (among other things to take place) by the end of February and found out I was preggo in November! Not good timing at all!
The numbness in my legs and feet is getting considerably worse and all my obgyn says is that "it will get worse"! Does anyone know how much worse this could get?....and what kind of delivery could I expect to take place (if I can still walk by then!).

If your back pain got worse bending backwards, it is really going to get worse with the pregnancy. Your body posture has to change as the weight of the infant on the front changes your center of gravity. To minimize it, try not to gain a ton of weight! The more weight you gain, the worse it is going to be!

As far as the numbness, if it gets the point you can not walk, get into the hospital ASAP. The numbness is caused by nerve compression and if they do not take care of it quickly, you could end up numb forever. You might ask about spinal traction as that will stretch out the spine and take pressure off the nerves. Do NOT take ANSAIDS like Aspirin and Motrin as that will increase bleeding at the time of the delivery.

As you get closer to delivery, you may want to talk to the anesthesia people about a spinal or epidural. Some will not stick a person if they have ongoing spinal nerve issues. If they will not do a spinal or epidural, you need to talk to your doctor about alternate methods of pain control for the delivery. (Pudental block?) If the anesthesia people said they will not do a spinal or epidural, if you need a C-section, you will have to have a general anesthetic. Just in case, while you are in labor, DO NOT go eating a bunch of ice chips!

On the alternate side, you may find your pain gets much better. One of the interesting things about pregnancy is the joints kind of loosen up in preparation for the delivery. This may help your back.

Lastly, consider breast feeding the infant. Besides all the good stuff you find in all the books about it, it will help you lose weight after the delivery. With any kind of back problem, losing weight is helpful in most of the cases. Sometimes all a person has to do to make their back better is dump the excess weight.

I was in the same boat as yourself....I ended up having surgery and had three areas of my back fused together as well as the taking out of one disc in my lower back. I had no feeling in my left leg once I started gaining weight. It just got worse and worse as time progressed. I ended up having surgery at Brigham and Women's hospital in Boston-major labor and delivery unit just in case it was needed. I had surgery at 24 weeks......and ended up delivering csection as it was too painfull in my lower back to push....your doctor is correct it will only get worse...better to take care of it earlier rather than later....

Well, maybe once you have your baby, your back pain will get better. Sometimes pregnancy can cause backpain. See how things are after delivery, maybe you won't have to have any surgery at all. Congrats on the pregnancy!!
