I am a black woman, does that mean i am a brunette? i thought brunette was for people with brown hair

Yes, brunette means a person having dark color hair. Brown comes in many shades from the lightest to the darkest so if you are in that range you are a brunette. Nobody truly has black hair, it is just a deep rich shade of brown. So, yes you are a raven hair(dark brunette) African American. BTW: Sherri their are African American women who have natural blond and red hair.

I've always considered "brunette" to mean brown hair, but there are also different shades of brown to consider. You can choose where to draw the line between brown and black.

As far as I know, being brunette means to have brown hair.
But, looking on Wikipedia, I guess I was mistaken to some degree. It says: Brunette is the feminine of French brunet, which is a diminutive of brun, brune, meaning brown or dark-haired, ultimately from Latin brunus (brown). It therefore means "little brown-haired girl", but in English usage it has largely lost the diminutive meaning, and simply refers to any dark-haired girl or woman (which is simply brune in French). Brunette in common usage refers to dark brown or black hair, but especially dark brown hair. It describes a woman or girl having dark or relatively dark hair.
