Don't know what the holes are that your seeing right now.
The webs with the hole in the middle that appear in your yard during the summer are probably wolf spiders. I get them in my yard as well. Their not really dangerous at all. If you go to your local garden store you might be able to buy an insecticide that could get rid of them.

I have those finger sized holes in my back yard also lots of them. I couldn t figure out what was making them until late one afternoon I was standing in my back door watching these two birds pulling at something in the ground when they each got the things out it appeared to be a nice sized treats for them, but not long like a worm. I finally got to see one of these critters. They are spiders, big and brown. Now i m going to see what I need to get rid of them. 1 hole per spider = creepy back yard!

Could be one of several things, depending on where you live. It could be Cicadas (see the below link), earthworms, mole crickets, and yes, spiders. As far as spiders go though, they normally don't make holes very close together. They are territorial. If they are the size of a finger, its probably cicads, or mole crickets (neither of which are dangerous). Or it may simply be (as mention above) the the ground has been airated. It the holes are evenly placed and uniform (making a repeating pattern), thats probably it.
Cheers!

My best guess is that they're beetles. They'd live underground as grubs most of the year, and then pupate, then become adults, making the holes you see as they clamber out of the ground.
There are also flies that do that, and even some moths that have subterranean pupae.

In my experience, skunks can make holes in your yard looking for grubs?
