no i dont think so. tessellations have to be uniform in shape, thus creating a pattern. however i dont think color is a pre-requisite for a tessellation. the pattern that makes something a tessellation has to be a pattern of shapes, not a pattern of colors.

They look much better in color or with different patterns. Check out Life and Art of M.C Escher and you will see some fantastic art using tessellations.
