It depends on where you live. Between 30 and 60 degrees north latitude in the northern hemisphere these winds are westerly. However coastal or mountainous areas are subject to conditions which alter the prevailing conditions so I would place a windsock in my garden and record its direction over a period of months or even a year and that will give you a much better idea of the winds in your particular micro-climate.

get a compass and find that direction or Look at the sun direction at midday and go 45 degrees to your right and that is about SW or look at established trees in and around the garden and see which way they are leaning; they lean away from the prevailing wind .

put up an expensive wind sock. they look good in gardens.
