Refine results for autism:

Actually, I do not have a child with autism. Instead, I have it. I am high-functioning with Asperger's Syndrome, which is part of the autistic spectrum disorders. I had a wonderful 3rd grade teacher who understood me and gave me skills which have helped me ever since then. I am currently working on my PhD in Educational Leadership and I teach school. Though I do not have a child with autism as asked, I wanted to respond to show that there is hope out there. Don't give up. Keep researching until you find what works for your loved ones who are going through this.

What helps me:
Daily planner
Notes to remember what I am supposed to do
Having a close confidant
Working with others who also have autism

I just have 3 children, but to remember where and when to pick them up each day (varies due to lots of extracurricular school and church activities), I have to get them to write it down for me. I have to keep up with my daily planner or I will forget to do important things. I even have to keep a checklist at home to remember simple things like taking medicine, vitamins, brushing my teeth, washing my face, etc. Though I test with a high IQ, it is common, ordinary stuff I cannot recall without help.

No, I can't say that I do. I am a teenager with moderate autism. I can type fine, but my words tend to scramble once I speak.

If your child has autism, it isn't a curse. It means that they just percieve the world differently than most. Most negative behaviors are caused by frustration and most frustration is caused by lack of communication. There are ways to communicate with an autistic child. Writing is my way of speaking.

I personally know a couple that communicate with their autistic children with musical notes since she responds best to them. Observing what your autistic child responds to will sometimes help.

My brother had four kids, two with autism. Low-functioning. Arianna is 10 & still has very limited speech, but she is starting to use her speech more meaningfully. By that I mean, she used to say "house" only when shown a picture of a house. Now she will say "house" when she is ready to go home. She used to just dissolve into fits. She does seem to be understanding speech a lot better, too.
The son never got a chance to go that far. He died in a drowning accident 2 years ago. Autistic kids are very frequently drawn to water.

I have a form of autism. Asperger's Syndrome. Also, I have an autistic cousin. If you want to know what it's like to have it, it makes me really respect neurotypicals for being able to read each other so freely. It may be harder to have low functioning autism because then you may never grow out of it and blame yourself for the wrong things you did. I hate remebering how I acted when I didn't know any better. It is painful not knowing if I'd act better in a social situation if I didn't have it, or whether it's my own fault.
Also, the good traits are overlooked. Some people say autism is part of their being.

i'm 14 and my little 8 year old sister has autism. my family has been through a lot. my little sister had seizures that completeley wiped her memory. we went to so many hospitals to try and get help for her. she was finally classified with autism, but i'm not really sure if she really is autistic or has some special kind of case.

Yes my twin son Thomas has severe asd hes 8 now , still non verbal and still in nappies, i wrote this poem i hope you don't mind me sharing it !

In you come here comes the little boy i adore
I think he knows me, i think he knows my name
Your smiling but is it for me or for ones of your many vtech toys !
Standing in the kitchen you point i say 'toast '
Mummy know's me alright, i didnt have to say a word and yep my mummy knows right
Looking in your eyes so bright with a smile that comes and goes
I wonder what will you do when your older
Will you ever have a special someone
or will you enjoy just being you the only person you answer to is you
Mummy will always love you and care for you
Hold my hand Thomas walk with me to the special place
Where noone knows us, but is this the world you already know
no one knows you like i do
If you hurt i know, if your angry i know
But if you cry i do too
I don't know why you are as you cannot say
Just let me hold you for a second or two and wipe your tears away
For crying does not suit you my happy little boy
