Republicans = pro-life, Intelligent Design, lower taxes, strong defense, school vouchers, anti-gay marriage, war against terror, smaller government, states rights, secure borders, and drilling in ANWAR.

Democrats = prochoice, Evolution, higher taxes, smaller defense but stronger UN ties, federally controlled schools, gay marriage, negotiations as way to handle terrorism, bigger government, federalism, open borders, no new oil well drilling.

At one time the country always came together in a time of war. Politics were put aside, and everyone was an American. Now it seems that no matter what our country faces, the facts are twisted and adulterated in a way to make the other party look bad, no matter the cost to our country. Isn't there anyone who puts America ahead of their respective political party anymore?

Of course there is common ground. On most issues there are three sides. Black, White and Gray. However, on certain moral issues there is only Black and White.

Abortion is such an issue, either it is killing a baby or it is not.

The over stepping of Constitutional powers by the Federal Government is always a problem with both sides.

This government was built on the principle of compromise. It is specifically designed to protect the rights of the minority from the tyranny of the majority. There will always be conflict and always be compromise.

As far as war goes, it appears that people want instant gratification in that, too. America was united at the onset, but when it wasn't over in six months people lost their focus. Opportunistic politicians check to see which way the wind is blowing on important issues then flip-flop. That is a problem for the ballot box.

Well, first off, your descriptions of both parties aren't entirely accurate, especially the mistaken idea that republicrats are for smaller government. The older you get, the better your chances are of understanding the futility of relying on the lofty words of politicos as any kind of belief basis, let alone worldview. The truth is that even when we went to war in WWI & WWII, there were plenty of people who didn't agree. But more to the point, the cultural makeup of this country was more cohesive then than it is now and we had strict immigration policies. And don't forget that our population is now what? 3X what it was back then? Of course, this is due in large part to an explosive growth of 3rd world immigrants, their influences good and bad and far higher concentration of urban dwellers than small 'friendly' communities. In a nutshell, I would look for even heavier fragmentation and social conflict as we sink further into 2nd world status. The best thing to do at this point is to simply understand the beast and work on a personal level to make your impact a positive, yet pragmatic one.

what you have to remember is that politicans are all liars... if they are elected they are liars.... next.. the people that you hear talking are WACKOS.. from the FAR LEFT and the FAR RIGHT....

most Americans think more in the middle... they dont like extremes.. but for some reason come election day they pull the lever anyway... what we need is a none of the above lever...

remember that some people will do anything for money and power... that is why we need a law in place saying you can only be in office no more than 8 years and you can never run for office again.. and you can never work as a lobbist after that... then we would get good people and none of these idiots we have on both side today

2 points to make.

First, you've listed issues. Refusing to compromise on issues may be a problem, but it's not the same thing as putting your party ahead of America. People don't support certain issues because they're in a party, they're in a party because they support certain issues.

Second, there is LOTS of common ground. Your list of issues is completely unfair, because there are plenty of people who think otherwise in both parties, or have other solutions you didn't list. But there are fewer of them in the leadership of the parties. And the job of the leadership is to advocate vigorously for their side, and compromise if they can. Sometimes compromise is not as good as standing firm. For instance, I think drilling in ANWR would do absolutely nothing good, including help the energy problem. I think opposing drilling there IS putting America first. I'm not going to compromise on that. Take abortion - do you think each side should compromise? Do you think compromise is even possible? Do you really think people support or oppose abortion to make their political party look good?

I am firmly straddling both sides - very conservative in fiscal policy and pro individual rights. Registered as an independent.

I don't believe the Constitution is just a piece of paper, but we certainly need to allow for changes in technology for any system of government to achieve any longevity.

So, yes there is common ground but most of us have made up our minds and will not change.

I very much hope we have viable candidates who will put the United States of America first.

Your question is a perfect example of why I choose not to align myself with any specific political party. In my opinion, the partisanship in today's government is nothing more than a old fashioned p***ing contest. People need to realize that in order to accomplish anything worthwhile, we need to put aside our differences and work together.
