Two types found in America, gray, canis lupus and the red, canis rufus.

The gray wolf: today only a few upper states and Canada have a gray wolf population large enough to maintain itself.

The red wolf: In 1980, they were declared biologically extinct in the wild. There have been reintroductions. To date all these have pretty much failed. Mostly because red wolf numbers are so low the breed with domestic dogs. Then the red wolf gene pool is diluted.
